On March 22, 2016 MHS Principal Jeff Springer presented this quarter's Magnolia High School Student's of Excellence to the members of the Magnolia Rotary Club. Pictured from left to right are Dylan Mayes, Jay Martin, Maryann Powers, and Lauren Batchelor.
 
Magnolia High School (MHS) Principal Jeff Springer told the group that being given a chance to talk about his awesome students is one of the more rewarding tasks he has as Principal. He said that all 4 of the students he would talk about today are in the top 10% of their senior class and he could not be more proud of them. Mr. Springer then spoke about the two senior boys first and then the two senior girls next before asking them to come up and tell everyone what college they were planning to attend and their career goal if they knew it. Mr. Springer then talked about each student in the following order.
 
1. Jay Martin
 
Jay Martin is ranked 8th out of 412 MHS seniors this year and was 1 of 2 MHS students to receive a National Merit Award. Although Jay has high grades in all of his subjects his passion is math and science. In addition, Mr. Springer told everyone that many people think that seniors carry a light load in the last year in high school but Jay has a class in all 7 school periods and in addition, all of those classes are AP classes. In addition, he is a UIL Science state qualifier which is an honor for not only himself but also his school. He is also in the Mu Alpha Theta Math Club and received the "Student of the Year" award in two of his math classes. Jay also has earned a number of community service hours with the Magnolia Animal Rescue organization. His teachers think highly of him saying he is extremely smart, courteous, and a pleasure to have in their class. Jay told the group that he plans on attending the University of California at Berkley to get a degree in Physics and plans to have a career in scientific research one day.
 
2. Dylan Mayes
 
Dylan Mayes is ranked 12th out of 412 MHS graduating seniors this year and is the technical guy for the MHS theater group and made sure everyone knows he is not an actor. Dylan also loves math and science and is a member of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Club. Dylan is also the current Student Council Treasurer and is considered to be a very well rounded student. Dylan also has a large number of community service hours under his built. His teachers say he is self motivated, bright, hard working, and a natural leader who is always seeking knowledge. Dylan told the group that he is planning on attending the Colorado School of Mines and will be majoring in Engineering but has not yet decided on a career path within Engineering.
 
3. Lauren Batchelor
 
Lauren Batchelor is ranked 16th out of 412 MHS graduating seniors this year and is a 3 time "All State Band Member" who has a love for music and plays the clarinet in the MHS band. Although taking a heavy senior course load, she is also a member of the NHS and a Section Leader in the MHS Band. Her teachers say she is a multi-talented, very respectful student that always smiles and is a joy to have in class. Lauren told everyone that she plans on attending the University of Texas at Austin and will major in Music. Although she has not picked a specific career yet, she knows it will be in music.
 
4. Maryann Powers
 
Maryann Powers is ranked 26th out of 412 MHS graduating seniors this year and is involved in many things in and out of school. She is involved in UIL Academics and is a member of the MHS Debate Team and has accumulated over 160 community service hours while taking many AP courses. In addition, she is the President of the Health Science Club and has taken courses in Medical Math and Technology. She is also a member of the UIL Health Science Team that recently placed 14th in a Health Science competition. Her teachers say she is multi-talented, hardworking, and a pleasure to have in their class. Mayann told everyone that she will be attending the University of Texas in Austin where she will major in Radio and Film. Maryann plans on being a screenwriter some day.
 
All of the above student also stated that they really love MHS and the teachers and staff. Each student also received a "Service Above Self" certificate from the Magnolia Rotary Club.
 
Magnolia Rotary Club President, Real Provencher thanked both the students and their parents as well as Principal Springer for coming to our meeting and sharing their achievements with everyone. Real also told the students that they are going to college to get an education and not to just concentrate on one area but continue to be well rounded by being involved in something else they like outside their field of study.
