On September 10, 2019, Jorey Herrscher spoke about his consulting company, "Herrscher Consulting" and specifically about the "Cost of Non-Leadership Management". Pictured above is Jorey Herrscher.

Jorey told everyone that he started his company several years ago after quitting his job of 16 years as a law enforcement officer. He was at a low point in his life and almost committed suicide before getting help and turning his life around. His company now provides seminars in Business, Leadership, Public Safety, PTSD, and Achieving Your Own Destiny. His talk at the meeting centered on Leadership.

On Leadership, Jorey asked everyone who they considered to be great leaders and a number of historical name game up. Jorey than showed photos of a number of leaders including Martin Luther King, Steve Jobs and the Wright Brothers and spoke about why they are considered great. Jorey than showed a picture of Adolph Hitler and told everyone that although he was a despicable person, he was non the less a leader who brought a large number of people under his influence. Jorey explained that the take away is that the term "leadership" is neither positive or negative. It is the characteristics traits of leaders that makes them great leaders. These traits include:

  • Honesty & Integrity
  • Confidence
  • Inspires Others
  • Committed / Passionate
  • Good Communicator
  • Good Decision Making Skills
  • Accountable
  • Delegate and Empower
  • Creative / Innovative
  • Empathic
Jorey also spoke to the cost to a company with a bad manager making $60,000 a year and assuming he only had one employee under him making $50,000 a year. If the manager is only 50% effective, than the company loses $30,000 a year. Then, assuming that the manager's sole employee has only a 50% effective output because of poor morale and direction from the manager, the company loses an additional $25,000 not including their benefits and the damage to the company's brand view and revenue. The total loss is at a minimum $55,000 and with benefits, brand view and revenue loses, it could be as high as $100,000.

Jorey than showed slides of what some famous people have said about leaders. One of the best (but not the shortest) was from Lao Tse, Tao Te Ching. Here is what he said:

  • "The superior leader gets things done with very little motion. He imparts instruction not through many words but through a few deeds. He keeps informed about everything but interferes hardly at all. He is a catalyst, and though things would not get done well if he weren't there. When they succeed, he takes no credit. And because he takes no credit, credit never leaves him."
Jorey than concluded that the common element between good leaders is as follows:

  • They Think, Act and Communicate in the exact same way and it is exactly opposite to what everyone else does.
Jorey than spoke a little about his non-profit company that is working to provide a support system for first responders. Jorey started the company to meet a need that first responders who experience PTSD need. Our country does fairly well supporting veterans but not first responders.
