Summer Hvasta and Matt Barrett, San Jacinto River Authority

Summer Hvasta and Matt Barrett, representing the San Jacinto River Authority [SJRA], informed the club on it's mission and future plans. The San Jacinto River Authority manages the San Jacinto River and its contributing watershed, located in Southeast Texas. The Texas Legislature established the authority in 1937 as the San Jacinto River Conservation and Reclamation District. In 1951, the legislature gave the SJRA its current name. The authority has managed the Lake Conroe reservoir since its impoundment in 1973.
Major efforts currently are focused on flood control. There is a pressing need for two flood control reservoirs within the San Jacinto River watershed. Proposed to be located in Waller County they will greatly reduce the likelihood of future catastrophic flooding. However, the costs and location present major challenges. Other projects look at controlling sand deposits that block waterways and fill reservoirs. See more: Sand Trap - San Jacinto River Authority ; Upper San Jacinto River Basin Regional Sedimentation Study - San Jacinto River Authority
It's clear that given the rapid population growth within the San Jacinto River basin, the SJRA has major challenges in order to get flood control facilities in place before it is too late.
