On Tuesday, June 29, 2021, the Magnolia Rotary Club awarded four local residents with a Paul Harris Award signifying individuals who exemplify the Rotary "Service Above Self" motto. Honorees pictured above from left to right are Rene Hancock (retired high school coach), Hope Moye (President of the Magnolia Rotary Club), Payton Trapnell (student with most community service hours), Donna Mizel (JD Barber Shop owner) and Steve Hoffart (Magnolia Pharmacy owner).
The dinner was held at the MISD Event center on FM1488 starting at 6:00PM. Before the awards were given out, Hope Moye spoke about the history of Rotary, the Paul Harris award and some of the projects that the Magnolia Rotary Club had completed in the not too distant past.
Real Provencher (using videos) then spoke to the group about the Magnolia Rotary Club's involvement in an International Rotary Peace Project in Sierra Leone. There were videos of local participants explaining how they were affected by the project as well as local Sierra Leone TV news comments about the Rotary projects. Real, using a story about a brick, illustrated how one individual can make a difference in many people's lives and how important the Rotary Foundation is to making Rotary projects a reality.
Frank Parker then presented the first Paul Harris certificate and pen to Rene Hancock who had personally helped many students including Frank's son who has become a full time trainer at a large company after being mentored by Rene Hancock to go to a sports training camp where Frank's son decided to become a professional trainer.
Kelly McDonald then presented the next Paul Harris certificate and pen to Payton Trapnell who in her senior year at high school managed to complete 575 hours of community service and still graduate 10th in her senior class of over 400 students. Peyton wants to become a veterinarian after graduating from Texas A&M. Peyton also received a $1,000 scholarship to Texas A&M from the club.
Frank Parker then presented the next Paul Harris certificate and pen to Donna Mizel who owns JD Barber Shop in Magnolia. Frank spoke of the way Donna has supported many community efforts as well as helping many individuals along the way. As a result, Donna is known by many in the Magnolia community area to be both a kind and generous individual and that includes many of the Magnolia Rotary Club members who get their hair taken care of by Donna and her awesome employees.
The last (but not least) Paul Harris certificate and pen was presented by Marceile Parker to Steve Hoffart who not only owns and manages the Magnolia Pharmacy but is also a member of the Magnolia Rotary Club. Steve is also known for his community involvement in helping others. Steve also was able to get his pharmacy to be one of the many places where anyone could get his or her Covid-19 shots. Steve and his team also made many bottles of hand sanitizer for local residents when the normal supplies of hand sanitizer were no longer available.
Each recipient of the Paul Harris award also received an individual placard with their name and picture that was signed by many of the people who attended the event. The photos below are of those placards but before many more people signed them:
